Roles and responsibilities at Latino Network:

I work with junior and senior students at Madison High School as part of the Escalera program. We discuss their college options, career possibilities, how to succeed in high school, as well as more personal topics, such as race, identity, culture, community, leadership, and self-advocacy. I support students and their families as they delve into the college and scholarship application process and help them identify their goals and strategize how to achieve those goals. I strive to make our conversations and what students learn in school feel relevant to their experiences, lives, and futures.

What motivates you to do this job at Latino Network?

My students motivate me. No matter what they are going through at school, at home, or in their community, they show up and keep working toward a better future for themselves, their family, and their community. Getting to know students and hearing their stories constantly reminds me of what a privilege it is to share a space with them. I am honored to encourage m students to consider their dreams and support them as they work to achieve those dreams despite the obstacles they face.

Interests and activities:

I always love going for a hike in the gorge and stopping at a brewery after, watching movies, going to plays, and drinking hot chocolate by a fire. I find writing to be how I express myself best, and I enjoy setting aside time to write on a rainy day, explore stories that often go untold, and learn about others through their writing or art.

Most proud achievement:

I am constantly amazed by and proud of my family. I was born in Portland, and raised with my sister by my mother, who is a Nicaraguan immigrant. Since I was young, my mother taught me the importance of education and always modeled the hard work required to follow your dreams. Both my mother and sister have overcome many obstacles and they each amaze me with their drive, passion, and dedication to their own future, their family’s future, and the future of the people who surround them.
