Group Volunteer Opportunity with Juntos Aprendemos

Prepping supplies for Juntos Aprendemos (Together we Learn): Help our instructors prepare materials for early childhood education program. During key periods assistant will help with material prep for programing, organizing, and other duties as assigned by volunteer supervisor such activities can include cutting out shapes for kids to create calendars, making puppets, or other preparation work. Note: All volunteers working directly with youth will undergo will be required to pass a background check

Volunteer with Early Escalera & Escalera

Volunteer with our high school college preparation and career readiness program helping the instructor with fun programs, student career and college exploration, and building a college-going mindset.

REQUIREMENT: 

Students are in need of a consistent positive role model after school. Whatever schedule you create with the school site, please make sure you can commit to it. Even if it’s an hour a week, students count on seeing your smile and showing you care about their well-being.

SCHEDULE:

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, roughly 3:15pm-5:00pm (specific schedules may vary depending on the location)

POSITION SUMMARY:

After-school support volunteers will be involved with all aspects of the afterschool programming, including check-in/supervision, assisting instructors in the classroom with general supervision and/or tutoring. This position involves working closely with high school aged youth, as well as school staff.

ACTIVITIES MAY INCLUDE:

Helping with academics or enrichment classes

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working with youth is preferred, as well as skills in communication, teamwork, and punctuality.

TIME COMMITMENT:  

8+ weeks commitment preferred. Volunteers may work up to 4 days a week.

Volunteer with Conexiones

Conexiones Classroom Assistant

Assist the Conexiones facilitator in after-school programing and help support positive cultural identity development, academic, as well as encouraging their personal growth.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Conexiones is an after school leadership development program for Latino middle school students that emphasizes positive cultural identity development, communication, skill-building, and creates a leadership and college-going culture.

VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist the Conexiones facilitator in after-school programing and help support positive cultural identity development, academic, as well as encouraging their personal growth.
Develop strong working relationships with participants, school, and SUN staff.
Other duties as needed by the facilitator.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:

Bilingual in English and Spanish

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE (OPTIONAL BUT PREFERRED):

Interested in developing, implementing, and facilitating classes for youth.
Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated consistency in following instructions and implementing strategies
Ability to be flexible and adaptive 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Walk long distances for youth excursions
May require lifting and moving boxes and other items as needed (twist, bend, reach, carry items up to 20 lbs. and think strategically about how to properly move heavy items)
Crawl or lie on floor or grass as appropriate for youth-centered activities
Move rapidly from extreme positions, i.e. sudden standing from floor

TIME REQUIREMENT: 

Mondays and Wednesdays 2:15pm-3:30pm

Must commit to one day per week every week OR every other week for at least 2 terms (4 months).

Volunteer with Teen Nights

Teen Nights: Be a role model for gang-involved and at-risk youth! Volunteer with our Teen Nights program, which provides safe spaces on weekends (Fri/Sat nights) at local community centers for gang-involved and at-risk youth, primarily young men, to stay off the streets. Must have experience or be interested in working with gang-involved and high-risk youth. Preference for males of color, but accept all volunteers. [Full volunteer description coming soon]
