Leadership & Development

The Diversity and Civic Leadership Academy

The Latino Network's Civic Engagement and Leadership Academy Program works with young emerging Latino English-speaking leaders and Spanish-speaking community members. We hold monthly trainings on social justice models; regional government; leadership development; social determinants of health; economic, environmental and social sustainability; civic engagement; working with public and elected officials; and community organizing. Trainers from the government, non-profit and private sector's provide participants the opportunity to learn first-hand from their real-world leadership experience.

Program participants identify critical community issues and develop an advocacy plan through an action-learning project that creates a positive community impact need.

The Academy has 45 Latino alumni working for the betterment of our community.

Latino Network's Civic Engagement and Leadership Program is supported through grants from the City of Portland, Northwest Health Foundation, the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, and Western States Center.

Education & Empowerment

Youth Leadership Development and Skill Building
Latino Network and its partners operate various programs that support youth to build social and leadership skills. Summer Academia for gang-affected youth provides cultural and educational workshops, weekly tutoring and mentoring support, and a thriving soccer program.

Juntos Aprendemos/Together We Learn

Juntos Aprendemos Serves more than 100 children & 80 children each year at the following Portland Public Schools: Rigler, Harvey Scott, and Cesar Chavez Elementary.  Glenfair (Reynolds School District) is also served.

The Juntos Aprendemos curriculum is designed to put children on track to meet key literacy milestones while parent education strategies promote sustained engagement in their children's academic lives.

Juntos Aprendemos offers a sense of hope and power as Latino parents work to close the achievement gap by building skills to prepare their young children for school success.  Since its beginning in 2000, Juntos Aprendemos has served over 550 families.

North Portland Youth Involvement Initiative

Latino Network is now partnering with the North Portland Youth Involvement Initiative.  The objective of NPYI initiative is to engage youth 12-17 years of age and encourage participation in educational and cultural enrichment activities. These include creation of after-school & evening programs/events intended to strengthen and reinforce positive messages; support educational awareness; and increase youth participation in established after-school programs.

The goal is to raise awareness on important subjects such as: Teen pregnancy, gang prevention, health and fitness.  Additionally, NPYI focuses on areas of interest to youth: Music, sports, arts and crafts, & other recreational activities.  For more information, please contact Edward Gutierrez at Edward@latnet.org.

Systems Change

Parent Organizing Project
A grass-roots project that trains and supports the parents at Scott and Rigler schools to become more engaged in their children’s day-to-day learning and advocate for their children’s educational needs and desires.

Concilio Somos el Futuro
A network of youth providers and advocates who are working in partnership with the Department of Community Justice to reduce overrepresentation of Latino youth in the justice system. Over the past three years, Concilio providers have built a culturally specific system of care to support the successful reintegration of youth who are on probation in our community.
