CANDIDATE PROFILE
The Family Engagement Specialist works as a part of a collaborative and energetic team to
implement a high quality, culturally inclusive family and youth engagement program. Latino Network seeks a bilingual, bi-cultural mission-driven professional with proven nonprofit and community experience to lead a full range of activities for a growing organization. As part of a dedicated team working toward a shared vision, the Family Engagement Specialist works as a part of a collaborative and energetic team to implement a high quality, culturally inclusive family and youth engagement program.. This is a roll-up-your-sleeves position with the capacity to impact and promote the organization’s vision and mission.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Family Engagement Specialist works closely with parents, students, families,
schools, and community agencies to improve and ensure the success of Latino/a
students in local school districts. The Specialist works collaboratively to achieve program
goals, and meet and document measurable youth and family outcomes, contributes to a
collegial and productive work environment, and promotes the organization’s vision and
mission.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Improve family access to schools and educators; educate parents on how to navigate the education system on behalf of their children; and support their children’s education experience
  • Educate participant parents about the importance of learning at home; encourage every family to build a home study zone where their children can complete homework assignments and research
  • Provide information, education, resources and tools for parents to support their children in areas of development and culture, promoting respect and analysis of traditions, customs and cultural heritage
  • Maintain communication with families through phone calls and in person to inform parents of meetings, classes and special events
  • Plan and organize weekly and bi-monthly classes for families. This includes the coordination of logistics, communications, and curriculum implementation.
  • Support and train parents to develop civic engagement skills and community organizing for policy change
  • Maintain accurate records and written communications including, but not limited to: contact information, attendance, and entrance/exit surveys
  • In collaboration with staff and independent contractors, support the gathering of data and the research and evaluation of program outcomes
  • Maintain strong working relationships with partners
  • Recruit and trains participants in leadership and school/community involvement by utilizing existing programs and relationships with schools, churches, and community groups
  • Promote the program through participation in meetings and conferences involving the school community and other community events
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and interns in the fulfillment of program tasks
  • Along with other team members, participate in and support the planning and implementation of summer programs, field trips and activities
  • Other duties may be assigned by supervisor

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in education, communication, sociology, psychology or related field
  • Knowledge of and experience in navigating educational institutions, resources, programs, social services and government agencies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Spanish and English
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience facilitating workshops and ability to facilitate clearly and fluently in both English and Spanish
  • Experience in designing and implementing programs for Latino community
  • Strong data management experience with high attention to detail
  • Strong event coordination experience
  • Minimum two (2) years community outreach or community organizing experience
  • Volunteer coordination experience preferred
  • Curriculum development experience preferred

ADDITIONAL ADMINISTRATIVE AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This job requires driving to various locations and sitting/standing for extended periods of time
  • Heavy lifting and walking during excursions and summer events
  • Will work in the community including client homes, schools, churches, parks, community centers, etc
  • Undergo and pass a criminal background checks
  • Regularly work in the office and in the community (schools, churches, parks, community centers, etc.) as needed
  • Evening and weekend availability is required, and work hours are flexible to accommodate program implementation; long hours during peak periods
  • Reliable car, drivers license, and automobile liability insurance; must be eligible to be an insured driver under Latino Network’s Commercial Auto Liability
