AmeriCorps VISTA Member Position Description

Summary of Position and Project Goal:

Rigler is a culturally-diverse, high-poverty dual Spanish immersion K-5 school in Portland’s urban farming neighborhood. The VISTA member will develop a parent leadership program to connect parents with neighborhood resources (such as hunger relief, skill building opportunities, employment services and financial literacy classes), and empower parents to share those resources with others.


Essential Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Continue building the Parent Resource Center (started in 2016)
  • Expand Parent Academy offerings with community partners
  • Nurture parent leadership through volunteer recruitment, training, support
  • Refine programs through monitoring, troubleshooting, reporting, communication

Marginal Responsibilities:

  • Strengthen business partners’ commitment to our annual Season of Sharing
  • Assist with translating monthly newsletter

AmeriCorps VISTA Member Responsibilities:

  • Attend all Campus Compact of Oregon AmeriCorps VISTA required trainings and events
  • Complete and submit all Campus Compact of Oregon AmeriCorps VISTA required progress reports, timesheets, and other paperwork

Required Qualifications:

  • 18 years and older
  • Must have at least an Associate’s Degree
  • Demonstrate a commitment to or willingness to explore issues of racial justice and equity
  • A U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident
  • Able to serve full-time for 365 days
  • Ability to pass a criminal history background check
  • Site Specific Requirements:
  • Must speak & write Spanish fluently

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project management experience
  • Event coordination experience
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office software

AmeriCorps VISTA Member Benefits:

  • A living allowance of $11,676 for the term of service, dispersed monthly
